Kate starts at St. Joseph's Senior School, Bexley. She is obliged to take up the violin, as all pupils have to learn an instrument. She plays well, but does not enjoy it.
Also at about this time she begins to set her poems to her own chord formulations. By 1971 embryonic versions of songs such as The Man With the Child in His Eyes and Saxophone Song begin to emerge.
